Carabao Cup: League Two underdogs knock out Premier League team

It was a busy night in the Carabao Cup, with seven third-round ties decided. It was also a very bad night for two Premier League sides.

Here is a roundup from all of Tuesday’s games in the Carabao Cup third round.

Bournemouth 4-1 Everton

Everton made 11 changes but still named a strong side for their trip to Bournemouth. However, they were well-beaten by their Premier League rivals.

The Toffees were never able to recover from an early Jamal Lowe strike, and it looked doubly difficult for them when Lowe set up Junior Stanislas to add a second just after half-time.

Demarai Gray briefly gave Everton hope of a comeback, but further goals from Emiliano Marcondes and Jaidon Anthony but the tie firmly to bed.

Brentford 1-1 Gillingham (5-6 pens)

Brentford will be scratching their heads at how they found themselves ejected from the competition at the hands of League Two strugglers Gillingham.

The Bees looked like they were in total control when Ivan Toney gave them an early lead.

However, they were unable to finish off Gillingham, who currently sit 22nd in the League Two table

That opened the door for Mikael Mandron to level late on to take the tie to penalties. The first 11 penalties were perfect, but Mikkel Damsgaard missed the 12th to send Gillingham though.
